Frances Elizabeth Leone was born in Utica, NY, on December 13, 1919 to the late Giovanni and Maria (Lacirignola) Leone, who immigrated to New York from Ausonia, Italy in1903. Pasquale (Pat) and Loretta (Zegarelli) Leone were her loving older siblings who predeceased her and whom she missed very much.

Frances married the late Lawrence J. Zegarelli Sr. on September 21, 1940 in Utica before he left to serve in WWII. While her husband was overseas, she worked at the Dunlap Tire recapping truck tires to help in the war efforts. Later she worked at the Oneida County Courthouse as a court attendant and made many great friendships there. She took up the art of painting in her golden years and enjoyed lessons at the senior center in Utica. Her work was featured in several art shows. She took great pride in her family, and always made sure they were taken care of and fed home-cooked meals, and guests never left her house hungry. Her husband predeceased her in 2012.

She is survived by her two sons, Lawrence J. Zegarelli Jr and Michele Romano, and Mark and Mary Lourdes Zegarelli; three grandchildren, Allyson (Stephenson) Zegarelli, Mark and Dr. Laura (Gerbin) Zegarelli Jr., and Sarah and Roy Kingery; two great-grandchildren, Dylan Snider and Aurora Stephenson; a niece, nephews, great-nieces, great nephews, and her extended family, Roger Lange. Her family would like to thank George and Maria Sipos for the loving and compassionate care they gave her over the last several years.

Frances was a pillar of strength for the family and will be greatly missed.

France’s family honored her in a private gathering and she was laid to rest beside her beloved husband in Calvary Cemetery. In memory of Frances, please consider donations to Alzheimer’s Research or your own favorite charity.
