Gabriel “Gabe” Mardany, 90, passed away with his devoted daughter, Gabrielle by his side on Thursday, October 26, 2017, at Upstate University Hospital-Community Campus.

Gabe was born in Utica on September 23, 1927, a son of the late Elias and Anna (Peters) Mardany. He was educated locally, attended Blessed Sacrament School, and graduated from T. R. Proctor High School. Gabe later attended Utica College.

During WWII, Gabe served as a Corporal in the US Army.

On September 1, 1952, Gabriel was joined in marriage to the former Hilda Tagliaferri of Rome, New York. Gabe and Hilda shared fifty-eight years of mutual love, respect, and friendship. His beloved Hilda passed away on May 4, 2011.

Gabe was always an entrepreneur. He began his career working at the family business, the Royal Bowling Center on South Street in Utica. Thereafter, along with his wife Hilda, opened the G & H Supermarket in Remsen and Fort Plain. At one time, he was the General Manager of the Pin-O-Rama Bowling Center, as well as, President of both Polar Bear Frosted Foods and G & G Wholesale Distributing Co. Always a people person, Gabe enjoyed working part time for the Oneida County Department of Tourism following his retirement.

In 2015, after losing his wife, he moved to the Sunset Woods Senior Community in New Hartford where he made many new friends and truly enjoyed each moment.

A man with an outgoing and friendly nature, Gabe adored his beloved Utica and the New York Giants. He enjoyed Turner Classic Movies and visiting with family and his many friends. Gabe was always genuinely interested in what was going on with you and his smile was infectious. He always made you feel good. He is survived by his devoted daughter, Gabrielle Mardany Hope, with whom he resided; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends including David & Teresa Montana, Dixon (Lois) Peters; Robert (Nancy) Tastle; William (Geri) Tastle; Louis Mardany and Edward Mardany, Jr. He was predeceased by his wife, Hilda; and brother, Edward G. Mardany.

Relatives and friends may visit on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon at The Matt Funeral Home, Utica. Gabe’s celebration of life with military honors will be held at the conclusion of calling hours with Chor-Bishop John Faris, officiating. Private interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery.

His daughter Gabrielle would like to thank the staff at Upstate Medical University for the tremendous care each provided to Gabe since March 2017, when he came to live with her in Syracuse, New York. Donations can be made to the Upstate Medical University Center for Neurosciences in Syracuse, New York in Gabe’s name.

Gabrielle, Please accept our deepest condolences concerning your Dad. He was one of our true heroes. My husband always had respect for him as he tried to embark on a new career in the biz as an upcoming grocery store kinda guy! Uncle Gabe, in my eyes, was that nurturing type and was always whispering something to him, no doubt, giving him good advice. Oh, I could go on but I'll leave that for another time.
