Elaine M. Mazzatti, 71, died on Monday, June 18, 2018, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, due to complications of heart disease.

She was born Elaine Marie Latte on July 28, 1946, in Utica, daughter of Marino and Mary (Carleo) Latte. She was educated in Utica public schools and a graduate of the Thomas R. Proctor High School Class of 1964. She went on to study at Utica College of Syracuse University and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Studies.

On June 29, 1968, she married Gregory William Mazzatti, with whom she shared 42 years of marriage until he passed away on November 16, 2010. She was employed as a first grade teacher at Horatio Seymour School, in Utica, until the birth of their first child. She then devoted her time and energy to the raising of her family, which eventually grew to four children, as well as caring for her disabled sister, Lauren, upon the unexpected death of their mom in 1989. She also assisted her husband in operating the family business, Gregorio’s Pizzeria, until early 2004, when they had to close due to their failing health. In her later years, after becoming legally blind, she was employed for a short time at the Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

As a youth, she was a very devout Roman Catholic and loyally attended St. Anthony’s Church. Although her family did not own a Bible, she had a strong desire to know what it was about. When she obtained a Bible in her young married years, she was greatly comforted to learn from the scriptures that those who die are not suffering or in pain and that someday “death will be no more.” As a result of her Bible studies, she eventually chose to become one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and was baptized as such on February 14, 1976. Her strong faith until her death was evident to all who knew her.

Though she suffered many years from complications of diabetes and heart disease, the love of her family fueled her strong desire to endure.

She was especially close to her cousins, whom she grew up with in their six-family home on Jefferson Ave. They were really like sisters to her. They formed their own “Cousins’ Club” and regularly met together. She always looked forward to these occasions and had very fond memories of spending time with them.

The true love of her life were her four children and five grandsons. Her grandsons were her heart and soul and gave her motivation to make it through each day. She said that when she was with them “all her pain went away.”

She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Jacquelyn and Theodore Wilkinson, of Utica, Gregory Jr. and Tammy (Tillson) Mazzatti, of Saratoga Springs, Rebecca and Dale Cavoli, of Sauquoit, Christopher and Lisa (Kapps) Mazzatti, of Utica; five grandsons, Lorenzo Sibilia, Giovanni Sibilia, Gregory Markus Mazzatti, Anthony Gregorio Cavoli, and Skyler Jack Liam Wilkinson; brother and his wife, Gary and Karen (Banas) Latte, of Saratoga Springs; sister, Lauren Latte, of Rome; sister-in-law, Judy (Murray) Latte, of Saratoga Springs; brother-in-law, Richard Mazzatti, of Rochester; sister-in-law Cecelia (Ventimiglia) Mazzatti, of Frankfort; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She cherished all of her family and also felt blessed to have many loyal and supportive friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gregory W. Mazzatti Sr.; parents, Marino and Mary (Carleo) Latte; inlaws Sebastian and Rosemary (Gentile) Mazzatti; brother, Anthony J. Latte; sister-in-law, Betty (Goodness) Mazzatti; brother-in-law, Robert M. Mazzatti; and special aunt, who was like a mom to her, Rose (Carleo) Guerriero.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, June 28, 2018, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St., corner of Mohawk St., Utica. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 29, 2018, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 585 Trenton Road, Utica.
