Mrs. Theresa Marie “Terry” (Cognetti) DeSantis, 88, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family, on Wednesday, July 4, 2018, at the St. Luke’s Home of MVHS.

Terry was born in Massena, NY, March 8, 1930, the youngest of three daughters, to the late Dominick and Julia (Critelli) Cognetti. She was raised and educated in Massena, until she was twelve years old, and her family moved to Utica, where she continued her education and graduated from TR Proctor High School.

On June 30, 1951, Terry was joined in marriage to Anthony P. “Flash” DeSantis. Flash and Terry shared over forty-nine loving years of marriage and raised their family here in Utica. Following his retirement, Flash and Terry opened DeSantis Gun Shop on Bleecker St., which they operated for over twenty years. Her beloved Flash passed away on April 21, 2000.

Terry’s life revolved around her husband, her children, and grandchildren, and their needs. In earlier years, she enjoyed going to gun shows and loved her summers at the family camp at Sylvan Beach.

She is survived by her beloved children, daughter and son-in-law, Julianne and Lance Giangolini; son, Anthony DeSantis Jr.; and always close to her heart was her daughter, Francine “Franny” Russo, who passed away in 2011; son-in-law, Phillip Russo; beloved grandchildren, Bryan and Lindsey (Gullo) Giangolini, David Giangolini and fiancé, Lindsay Jones, Philip Russo Jr., Andrea Russo, Zachary DeSantis, Sienna DeSantis, and Jacob DeSantis; sister-in-law, Carol DeSantis; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Joseph and Pat DeSantis; brother-in-law Doc Speciale; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Frances Corelli and Rose Pelle.

Her funeral will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony and St. Agnes Church. Private interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St., at Mohawk St., Utica.

My sincere thoughts are with Terry's family. I so enjoyed working w/ her at Sears for many years. Your mom was such a loving & thoughtful woman . We shared many little chats during our work day...her main concern was always her children and how much she adored them . May Jesus keep all of you strong during this very sad time.
