Mrs. Mary Gabriel (MacLagger) Acey, 71, after a brief illness, left us to join her beloved husband and son on Monday, July 30, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse.

Mary was born in Utica, December 23, 1946, a daughter of the late Robert “Cobb” and Evelyn (Bailey) MacLagger. She was educated in local schools, graduating from St. Francis De Sales High School. On September 5, 1970, at St. Louis Gonzaga Church, Mary, married the love of her life, Thomas Maroun Acey. Tom was a well known local drummer and singer who played in many groups over the years and Mary was his biggest groupie. Tom and Mary shared over forty-three loving years of marriage totally dedicated to each other and their family. It is some comfort to know she has rejoined her beloved Tommy and her son, Robert.

Mary was employed at St. Elizabeth Hospital in administration for eight years. After being a housewife for several years while she raised her three children, Mary later worked for the Utica City School District as a secretary and administrative assistant for many years.

A true character, Mary was a unique and strong woman, who always faced life head on. Her great sense of humor and commonsense approach to any situation got her through some difficult times. Her absence will leave a void that can never be filled. She will be sorely missed by all of her friends here in New York State as well as her winter home in Port Orange, FL.

She is survived by her two children, son Gary and daughter-in-law, Pamela Davis-Acey and daughter, Audra Acey, her grandchildren, Gianna Marie Acey, Robert Francis Acey, Matthew Thomas Acey and Abigail Elizabeth Acey, and Abigail’s mom Kelley Caruso; her brother Robert MacLagger and his partner Margo Christofer, her sister Kathleen Di Donato; a special sister-in-law, Sheila Acey Tutino; also many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. She was predeceased by her husband Tom and son Rob, her brother Ross MacLagger, brother-in-law, Jim Tutino and sister-in-law, Laura Pollakoff.

The Divine Liturgy of the Faithful Departed will be celebrated on Friday at 11 am at St. Louis Gonzaga Church. Relatives and friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 7 pm at The Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St. at Mohawk St. Utica.

The Prayer of Incense will be sung on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

The family would like to offer their thanks to Dr. William Graber and the staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital for their efforts during Mary’s brief illness. They also have deep gratitude to Sally O’Callaghan, FNP for her many years of care.

In memory of Mary, please consider making a donation to the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties. Inc. . Please indicate that the gift is for the Thomas Acey Memorial Scholarship Fund, which awards a scholarship each year to a graduating Utica High School Senior.

Gary and Audra, I met your mom years ago when we went bowling on Tuesday mornings. We enjoyed ourselves so much back then.. So few years later when she was working at Conklin School, she talked me into applying for a job there.. Years later we both ended up at Proctor.. I worked with Rob, God love him and kisses to him., and Gary. Miss not seeing them everyday. She is probably very happy to be with your dad and brother.. prayers to you both. I know she will be truly missed. Mary

Gary and Audra, Many fond memories of your Mom, her siblings and parents growing up across the street on Wilbain Drive. Every time we ran into each other through the years she always made me laugh. She will be missed. God bless you both.
