Marie C. Vitagliano, 89, formerly of Geer Ave. in Utica, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at The Mulberry House of The Sitrin HealthCare Center.

Marie was born in Utica on May 2, 1928, a daughter of the late Antonio and Carmela (Taurisano) Vitagliano. She attended local schools and Utica College, where she received a Master’s Degree in education from Syracuse University in 1971. As a young woman, Marie was employed in the family business, A. Vitagliano & Co.. In 1968, she took a position as a special education teacher in the Utica School System. During her career with the schools, she also worked at Children’s Hospital piloting many programs for alternative education. She retired in 1992. Following her retirement, she continued her love of teaching by volunteering in the reading program for the Utica City School District.

A gentle woman of fine character, Marie’s needs were simple; if her family was happy, she was happy, and in her own words, “My family is my life”.

She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Jean and John Zumpano Sr., of New Hartford; sister-in-law, Donna Vitagliano, of Utica; and brother-in-law, David Mancuso and his wife, Lynda of N. Myrtle Beach, SC; many beloved nieces and nephews and she was a proud Godmother to many of them; and also surviving are many cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her beloved brother and sister, Paul Vitagliano and Diane Vitagliano Mancuso.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. She will be laid to rest with her parents at Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St., corner of Mohawk St., Utica.

The family would like to offer their deepest thanks to the staff of the Mulberry House of the Sitrin Home for the loving care shown to Marie during her residence there.
