Mrs. Lena Marie (Russo) Palumbo, surrounded by her loving family, peacefully joined her late husband Joseph F. Palumbo on October 2, 2017.

Born in Utica, NY on September 13, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Dominick and Angeline (Lubertine) Russo.

Lena was united in marriage to Joseph at St. Anthony Church, Utica. The couple resided in Utica until Joseph’s death in 1990. Lena then moved to Rome, NY to live closer to family. As a young girl, she lived through the Great Depression, and worked to assist her family. Lena was raised Catholic by her parents and continued to practice her faith with her husband and family many years as a parishioner of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church in Utica.

She worked at the Mele Manufacturing Company, and ended her work career as a Foster Grandparent.

She was a loving and caring daughter, wife, mother, grandmother “Gma”, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Lena was often nostalgic for the times gone by, and had a heart of gold. If she was a millionaire, all her family and friends would be as well. She loved games, her favorite being Pokeno, and also enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino and was a die-hard Buffalo Bills fan.

Lena was blessed with several friends with whom she enjoyed inviting to her home for a cup of coffee, cookies, and good conversation; however, her happiest times were spent with Family.

Lena is survived by her loving children, Marco and Christine (Ficco) Palumbo, Cheryl (Palumbo) and Keith Burch, Joseph and Stacey (Shaw) Palumbo. Her precious grandchildren, Christopher and Melissa (Cober) Palumbo, Cory Palumbo, Cassandra Palumbo, Keith Burch Jr., Dominick Palumbo, Colin Palumbo, and her latest blessing great-granddaughter, Milani Palumbo. She also leaves her sister-in-law, Mrs. Judith Hogan; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and dear lifelong friends.

Lena was predeceased by two grandsons, Joshua and Jeffrey; and siblings, Dominick Jr., Nicholas, Samuel, Madeline, Marion and Angeline.

The Palumbo family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the following: Senior Network Health of Oneida County for their never ending support, and the entire Masonic Home Care Community; especially the Troy unit staff for their amazing care shown not only to our mother, but to our family.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St., at Mohawk St., Utica. Private interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, where her family will honor her.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Heart Association or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

My condolences to the entire Palumbo family. Through our childhood our families were connected and enjoyed many good times. Our mothers grew up together and shared the same values passed on to us. Your mother had a heart of gold for all the kids and I'll always remember that. Unfortunately I'll not be able to make it to Utica for the calling hours, but I'll keep the family and your mother in my prayers and thoughts. May she RIP.
