Mrs. Marjorie “Joan” Pugliese, 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at The Masonic Care Community.

Joan was born on October 31, 1923, in Wales - United Kingdom, the daughter of William and Edith (Faulkner) Sayce. Raised and educated in England, she was very proud of her English heritage and remained a loyal British subject until her death. During WWII, she met Ralph Pugliese, an American soldier, and a wartime romance began. Following the war, Joan moved to the United States and the couple married on St. Patrick’s Day in 1947. They shared 49 years together, living first in Herkimer and later Syracuse, where Ralph attended Syracuse University. Ralph received a master’s degree in Political Science. They moved to Utica, where Ralph taught at Proctor High School for many years. He passed away in 1996.

A great lover of the arts, Joan was employed for many years as a receptionist at Munson-Williams Proctor Institute, where she always took a keen interest in their programs and exhibits.

She is survived by her two beloved sons and daughters-in-law, Rudy and Mary Ann Pugliese, of Honeoye Falls, NY and William and Sang Pugliese, of Castleton-on-Hudson, NY; three grandchildren, Julie Pugliese, Diana Pugliese, and Tori Pugliese; and many beloved nieces and nephews, here and in England.

Her family will honor her in a memorial gathering from 1 to 2 pm. on Monday, October 9, 2017, at the Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St., corner Mohawk St., Utica. She will be laid to rest in her beloved England in the near future.

The family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Monticello Unit for their loving care of their mom during her residence there.
