Lila J. Slaughter, 27, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

Lila was born in Rochester, NY on April 19, 1990, a daughter of Teresa Burton and Tawfek Bashar. She was raised in Utica, attended local schools and graduated from T.R. Proctor High School in 2008.

Lila was a free spirit, and very determined individual, who lived life on her own terms. She will be sadly missed by her mother, Teresa Burton and her father, Tawfek Bashar; her brothers, Richard Burton and his wife, Ashlee of Ilion, and Shaheed Dickerson of Syracuse; her sister, Commarrah Bashar and her fiancé, Eric Canlas of St. Paul, MN; three special kids, Ayla Burton, Braydin Clark, and Serenity Burton; and also many aunts, uncles, and cousins, especially acknowledging her aunts, Patricia Stewart and Brenda Slaughter.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday at 4 to 5 p.m. at The Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St., at Mohawk St., Utica. There will be celebration of Lila’s life at 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Private interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider the needs of Lila’s family at this difficult time.

Terry and family, My heart goes out to you, may you be blessed with cherished memories stored forever in your hearts. She has gained her wings now whether it be a dragonfly, butterfly or perhaps a dove, she will speak with you. Sending you love, strength and healing.

Lila, you left this life way too soon. Spread your wings in peace. Terry, Tawkef, Richie, Ashley and family, I wish there was a way for me to ease your pain. Lila will be with you, watch for her. Praying for all. May God bring you comfort. Love you.
